Learning without Borders - Blended Learning for Children of Occupational Travellers in Europe

Strategic partnership for developing an online platform to insure the right to education for children of occupational travellers in Europe within an ERASMUS-Education program of the European Union.

Objectives

Children of occupational travellers have a right to education. In the 21st century European borders should not be relevant. But the educational reality – because of the frequent change of schools for these children – results in an enormous educational disadvantage. To compensate for this a transnational online-learning-platform has to be developed within the strategic partnership of the Erasmus+-Educational programme „Learning without Borders – Blended Learning for Children of Occupational Travellers in Europe“ to enhance „Blended Learning“ and to help schools in Europe coordinate and to ensure the education of those children.

Main steps of action

The strategic partnership of the Erasmus+-Education project „Learning without Borders – Blended Learning for Children of Occupational Travellers in Europe“ will have the following main steps of action:

  • The transnational exchange of good practices of „Blended Learning“ for children of occupational travellers between the „Stichting Rijdende School” and the „Schule für Circuskinder“ on one hand and the schools in Austria [Italy, Poland are in planning phase] on the other hand, with the aim that these schools can become "base-schools" for these children. Base schools will coordinate the education of children of occupational travellers regardless of wherever the children are.
  • The development of new educational methods, innovative learning ideas and concepts for children of occupational travellers in the countries participating in this project.
  • The application and development of instruments and methods of „Blended Learning“ for children of occupational travellers aimed at improving the teacher training at the base-school of the participating countries.
  • Short and long-term mobility projects to ensure learning possibilities for pupils whose parents are occupational travellers and the teachers of the base-schools who are partners for the duration of the project and even longer.
  • Innovation and transfer of „Blended Learning“ for children of occupational travellers who visit regular school, using the European „eTwinning-network“.

The project is planned to run for 24 months, starting in school year 2017/2018. The project planning and development are budgeted at 90,000 €/year.

Key Elements & Experts

Project-Coordination

We, the European Network for Traveller Education (ENTE e.V.) are responsible for the overall coordination of this project.

Scientific Support

This project will be scientifically monitored by the University of Essen, Faculty of Educational Studys, lecturer and school advisor Heinz Gniostko.

Education Setting & Culture

As a strategic partner of the Erasmus+-Projects the Katholische Circus- und Schaustellerseelsorge der Deutschen Bischofskonferenz and the Landelijke Parochie voor Binnenvaart, Circus en Kermis help with their network to understand the „culture“ of occupational travellers and their children. The European Network for Traveller Education (ENTE e.V.) helps to understand the educational setting.

Blended Learning

The long-term experiences the project partners Stichting Rijdende School and the Schule für Circuskinder in NRW der Evangelischen Kirche im Rheinland gained in the field of education of children whose parents are occupational travellers, especially in the area of online-learning, are the starting point for the transfer of knowledge of Blended-Learning and the transnational exchange of good practice to the Schul-Werkstatt in Austria. Schools in Italy und Poland should follow.
